Stuff like One Piece, Shaman King, and Naruto, stuff we love watching, comes to the US in hopes of attracting new fans, gaining new light and such. We see it as it (was), and hope for something great to come from it as it finally enters our domain. Then the cutting, clipping, dicing of art happens. Storylines get cut, parts of characters ripped out for the simply put reason as,"Its offensive to children, if kids see this they'll suddenly start doing these things."
its too much nowadays, I see blood, smoking, people killing people, its all around us folks. the TV is not censored and can't always be, kids will see it eventually, mostly from their parents. So why do they cut everything, to make it Kid Friendly, and what is Kid Friendly anyways?
thoughts anyone?

Before I go on, I understand the plight of television studios and parents. The television studios are certainly partially to blame for what version gets aired. They still have a say on what is 'appropriate' and 'inappropriate' for entertainment, and it's difficult to step away from deeply-engrained traditions. Especially when parents are discouraging certain aspects of entertainment from being shown to minor.
Unfortunately, parents don't always want to monitor what their kids watch, and they don't always have time. What we end up seeing is the move to pressure television executives or show producers to ban/edit out violent and sexual imagery from their productions. This concerns anime because many still believe that a cartoon is 'kiddie fare,' having nothing to offer for the adult audience. When something comes along that challenges that view, many place responsibility on the company to do something about it, not the adult.
Ultimately, what this form of editting hopes to achieve is make the shows conform with the 'official view' of the United States--that kids are not ready to view this sort of material, and it is highly inappropriate to show it to them in a form they regularly consume. As noted, though, the subject matter is shown in a variety of other ways, not just in animated form. Many children will be exposed to violence and sexuality somehow, whether or not they watch uneditted anime.
Part of the problem may partially stem from the apprehensiveness towards having to answer questions. If a child sees soemthing he doesn't understand, he'll ask questions. A lot of times parents don't feel like telling the reality, and use euphemisms or discourage the practice of asking.

Well, Yes. Some Violent Animes appear Right on Day, and Kids can see them if they want to. These Types of Animes should be Saved for late nights, when the older People can watch. Even Worse, Some parents dont care about what they watch: so Kids can watch anything that can be found on a TV. Some animes are "Edited," But they still have a lot of Violence in it, So either the Parent Nor the Kid is to blame.
But, You cant Stop a Kid from Watching what they want sometimes- they may find it Funny, or Interesting, Which leads to Arguements. Sometimes.

Welcome to the boards, crashtest. And I agree--kids will find a way to watch what they want. It'll happen, and usually it leads to an interesting confrontation with their parents.

Well I know this when I was a 13 year old yeah i know a full 2 years back i watched trigun and while it was violent I learned alot about how to treat others correctly because of it and also alot on chivalry, so sometimes the great degrees that anime takes things to actually teaches kids a lesson.

Since I'm not from the U.S. I don't know how badly cut it is over there, but in Germany there are two kinds of Anime. The first are the child time ones, which air generally around 6 am till 8 pm. The other ones are the Adult ones, which air around 8PM till 6 AM. Well the last ones are rather rare, but nontheless they are uncut. I think that's just the way the "Christian" part of the world handles these kinds of entertainment, so I don't have any problem with it and if there is an anime I want to watch uncensored I either download it or buy a dvd with the uncensored stuff

The United States is getting better at leaving shows uncut--though these can land within the same timeframe as the adult time slot in Germany, it turns out, depending on the show's content. Adult Swim, on Cartoon Network, regularly airs dubbed anime that's just short of completely uncut most of the time--cursing is occasionally bleeped, along with other edits I'm sure I'm leaving out.
