Hmmm, good question. I would personally start off with Bleach or Gundam SEED. To me, these two exemplify how wonderful anime can be - a serious drama unfolding gradually and skillfully. SEED, especially, since it deals with war on a grand scale.

Favorite anime, huh? Let's see...
1) Tenchi Muyo!: It's likely the first 'harem anime' (one guy, many girls vying for him) people have watched, and it remains one of the best ones to this day. It doesn't rely on sex comedy to make it work, and it's got some good cultural elements. 2) Elfen Lied: When one of the lead characters kills over 30 people in the first episode, you know you're in for a ride. It's not your typical animated show, certainly violent. It's not for everyone, but it's interesting. 3) Haibane Renmei: From the creators of Serial Experiment LAIN. One of the avatars on this board is a picture of Reki. It's a show that awards patience and relies on fantastic story-telling rather than guns and sex appeal to sell it. It'll pull you in. 4) Gokujou Seitokai: I may have misspelled this, but what the heck? It's a funny show where the protagonist uses a puppet--and the puppet seems to run independently of the one holding him.

I still thuroughly believe flcl is one of the greatest animes if not the greatest. It had a great animation style unforgettable characters and great yet short action. Plus I can relate the story to my life.

"Still thorougly believe FLCL"? I'm not sure what you mean by that, since it's a little obtuse, but I agree with your sentiments. FLCL is a neat show. It's got the kinds of off-the-cuff imagery that would make a surrealist proud.

Here's Mine:
Love Hina: When you past all that.. Er.. Adultness, it really is a Nice, and Funny show. and Manga. the First Eppy is Really Funny, and less Sex Puns. Gundam Seed: Only 50 Eppys? how sad. It really Reels you in, as it Shows what war can do. Music is Good too. Gundam Seed Destiny: Ok. Its not in English. Oh well. This takes place RIGHT in the Middle of Gundam Seed, plus adds a bit more to it. Plus, One Character will die that will change the Gundam Seed Universe Forever.
Right, thats it.
